Report On DF-Day Activities

A special seminar was organized by the Kolkata Team (Ilug-CalInfo) on the occasion of Document Freedom Day. The sessions proved to be a big success. The venue for the event was DPS India (NAM Complex).

Though we put up the posters, flags, and stickers all over place by 14:00 hrs, the actual sessions were delayed by over thirty minutes. We had over forty participants.

The programme was :

  • Inaugral Session
  • Lecture -1:
Aman Gopal Sureka "Using Templates in Open Office"
  • Lecture-2:
    A. Mani "Introduction to LaTeX, ConTeXt and Professional Typesetting"
  • Open Session

Aman Gopal Surekha spoke about ODA and proceeded on to aspects of the ODF format. He also demonstrated the use of styles in conjunction with fields in Open Office. The presentation slides will be uploaded soon. Of course, aspects of the evil MSOOXML format were mentioned.

A. Mani spoke about aspects of the evolution of LaTeX and explained some aspects of document preparation using it. The presentation of the "Introduction to LaTeX" part was based on the TUG India Tutorials. A. Mani also spoke of applications of LaTeX in digitalisation of documents, professional reports and other fields.

Many aspects of usage and migration from proprietary formats were also discussed.

Some of the photos taken by Suman will be uploaded soon at the ILUG-CALINFO site and here. Both speakers and JPM shared the three T-shirts amongst themselves.

Some more copies of the power packed DVD (the media of which, has been sponsored by Dan Trevino) are still available and will be given to those who require it the most. The DVD includes ISO images of TexLive2007, Kubuntu-7.10 (alternate 64-bit), Mandriva-2008 (One) and DSL-4.0, ODF vs MSOOXML, apart from a whole lot of Templates, Tutorials, AddOns, Books, Clipart and Binaries for applications using the ODF format (including Open Office, Gnumeric, AbiWord, Koffice and Others).

For the entire event, the Kolkata team would like to thank Document Freedom.Org, DPS India, all speakers, participants and Ilug-CalInfo.
