As you know, to close our 2012 edition of the Document Freedom Day, we sent handcuffs to 100 politicians, and other public personalities, asking them to consider the problem of the lack of use of Open Standards, symbolised by "digital handcuffs".

Document Freedom Day 2012 was a great success! America, Asia, Africa and Europe celebrated together Open Standards at 54 events. It is no doubt that DFD is growing and we believe that it will be even more successful next year. So what about having look at what happened around the world on 28th of March? And what has the Pope to do with Open Standards? Read our detailed report to find out.

The Free Software Foundation Europe awarded the Slovak Commission for Standardization of the Public Administration Information Systems and its working groups with the Document Freedom Award this week. The Commission was awarded for its long standing commitment and achieved results in the field of the Open Standards. The prize was presented on the occasion of Document Freedom Day, the international day of Open Standards.

There are so many things happening at the moment. We are not able to write a news entry for each event. Heute startet der Document Freedom Day 2012 um 10:00 UTC, 00:00 UTC +14. Die erste Veranstaltung ist in Nagoya, Japans drittgrößte Stadt, danach folgen Veranstaltungen in Yuli (Taiwan) und Jakarte (Indonesien).

This year's DFD is approaching fast, and we can already say that we will have had a good year: More than 30 events have been registered in South-America, Africa, Europe, Asia, and Oceania. However, both we and you could do a lot better, and there is still time to register and organise an event. North-America, Africa, Oceania, and Asia desperately need more events. Also, while Central Europe is well covered, Europe's western, eastern, and northern parts could do with additional events. Anlässlich des am Mittwoch stattfindenden Document Freedom Day, veröffentlicht die FSFE einen Artikel vom Mitgründer der FSFE Bernhard Reiter. Es geht darum, was ein gutes Datenformat ausmacht, argumentiert, dass Offene Standards wichtig sind, aber das nicht ausreicht. Seine Kernfrage bei Datenformaten ist: "Geht das einfacher?"

Európske združenie Free Software Foundation Europe, e.V., so sídlom v Berlíne udelí dňa 26.3.2012 o 9:30 na pôde Ministerstva Financií SR, slovenskej Komisii pre štandardizáciu ISVS a jej pracovným skupinám symbolickú cenu - Document Freedom Award, za ich viacročné úsilie ako aj dosiahnuté výsledky v oblasti presadzovania otvorených štandardov. Cena bude odovzdaná pri príležitosti dňa otvorených štandardov ako súčasť celosvetovej akcie Document Freedom Day 2012.

To make these plans a reality, we need your support as a partner of Document Freedom Day 2012! Talk with your friends/regional groups, and think about activities and events that you could organise to promote Open Standards. We would be happy to help you with ideas, prize-giving, and finding sponsors.

Am 28. März 2012 wird die Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE) bereits zum vierten Mal den Document Freedom Award verleihen. Mit diesem Preis zeichnet das deutsche Team der FSFE und der FFII deutsche Institutionen oder Unternehmen aus, die einen besonderen Beitrag zur Verbeitung von Offenen Standards leisten. Der Document Freedom Award wird alljährlich im Rahmen des Document Freedom Days verliehen, dem internationalen Tag für die Bedeutung Offener Standards.

As you might have noticed, we are currently restructuring the website. The design was changed, as well as the front page and we updated our contact information.

Today, activists in 37 cities around the world are raising awareness for Open Standards and open document formats. In workshops, talks and other events, they are explaining why Open Standards and Free Software are crucial to a free and competitive information society.

Tagesschau.de, die Internetplattform der ARD, wird heute anlässlich des "Document Freedom Day" für den Einsatz Offener Standards ausgezeichnet. Die Auszeichnung verleihen die Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE) und der Förderverein für eine Freie Informationelle Infrastruktur e.V. (FFII) dafür, dass die angebotenen Sendungen zusätzlich im offenen Videoformat "Ogg Theora" verfügbar sind.

Ihre Stadt kann als Gastgeber für den Document Freedom Day (DFD) teil einer weltweiten Kampagne sein, welche das Ziel hat die Bedeutung von Offenen Standards und offenen Dateiformate herauszustellen.

Die Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE) feiert den Document Freedom Day 2011 und lädt Einzelpersonen, Projektgruppen und Insitutionen dazu ein, mit ihnen am 30. März den Document Freedom Day (DFD) zu begehen. Der DFD ist ein globales Ereignis, an dem Offener Standards und offenen Dokumentformaten, sowie deren Bedeutung gedacht wird. Offene Standards stellen sicher, dass Sie eine Zugangsmöglichkeit zu Ihren Daten haben und ermöglichen es, Freie Software zu programmieren, um Dateien in bestimmten Formaten lesen und schreiben zu können.
