Am jährlichen Document Freedom Day werden weltweit Internetauftritte ausgezeichnet, die offene Standards, insbesondere maschinenlesbare Dokumente, anbieten. Leider wird Berlin wieder leer ausgehen. Dabei liegt der Nutzen offener Dokumente auf der Hand. Gut verwendet können offene Daten dazu beitragen, im Straßenverkehr Staus zu vermeiden oder Angebote beziehungsweise Störungen im ÖPNV schnell und umfassend zu kommunizieren. Erhöhte Lärm- oder Staubwerte können belegt werden, der Vergleich von Aktenteilen zur Aufklärung des BER-Debakels wird erleichtert. Es gibt enorm viele ausgezeichnete Gründe, Dokumente digital, frei und in offenen Formaten zu publizieren. Deshalb haben wir ein Video zum Document Freedom Day gemacht: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LX8hjT35_Xc Leider zeigt der Berliner Senat seit dem Start des Open-Data-Portals wenig Engagement. Der wegweisenden Studie des Fraunhofer-Institutes folgte keine Umsetzungsstrategie. Die Wirtschaftsverwaltung taucht ab, die Innenverwaltung ist im Ausschuss regelmäßig nur bedingt auskunftsfähig. Das Landesportal wird nur unstrukturiert und in Einzelprojekten fortgeführt. Das reicht nicht aus. Der Berliner Senat ist gefordert, die digitalen Schätze zu heben und zu teilen - denn dieser Schatz gehört allen Berlinerinnen und Berlinern. Von der symbolischen Auszeichnung des Document Freedom Day, der obligatorischen Torte, ist Berlin daher leider zu Recht noch weit entfernt.

From the end of February we have been conducting Freedom and Art Workshops in Berlin. We are using Free Software to make Artwork for DFD. The people who are attending our workshops are mostly beginners or artists who know almost nothing about Free Software or Open Standards. Through the workshops we are raising their awareness about Open Standards and creating promotion material which can be used next year. On March 27, we will present our work and release it.

  A incompatibilidade entre os mais diferentes softwares para edição e visualização de imagens vetoriais ou bitmap no mundo do software proprietário, ou a obsolescência programada dos formatos proprietários, obrigam empresas e usuários adquirir uma nova licença de uso. O assunto é atualmente um dos principais fatores por uma larga adoção de formatos abertos e livres. Nesta palestra será explicado a diferença entre gráficos vetoriais e bitmap, quais padrões abertos existente atualmente e ferramentas livres para edição e visualização.

Code for Hampton Roads regular meetup/hack night will be focused on populating the newly released HRVA LocalWiki with relevant data.

On DFD, we will celebrate in İzmir in a scientific event organized by Tübitak (The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey) which many high school students and teachers will attend to.

Anthony Mao, a free information facilitator at Fu Jen Catholic University, will give a lecture at LE 105 13:40-13:30 in that University.

We intend to organize a workshop with sessions on advocacy related issues and development. The exact location, collaborations and program will be notified soon.

• Panel I - Data portability and privacy in the eHealth sector: Can data portability meet the need for robust patient centric privacy in the eHealth sector? Does Open Standards play a role to achieve that?
• Panel II - Open standards for critical digital infrastructure: How we can effectively make transparent or open infrastructures through adequate industrial leadership? How do public institutions and publicly elected bodies currently try to address these issues?

The event is organised as a workshop - it will be aimed on the intellectual property law, open licenses and open standards and usability of them on the governmental level.

There will be at least 2 talks on these topics which will be held by law school teachers and managers from the FOSS sector.

For their consistent use of Open Standards, taz.die tageszeitung (TAZ) will be awarded the German Document Freedom Award, by the Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE) and the Foundation for a Free Information Infrastructure e.V. (FFII). The award is for offering digital subscriptions using Open Standards including PDF, ePub, HTML and plain text formats. In addition, all content is provided without Digital Restrictions Managament.

Carlo Piana irá fazer uma palestra na ocasião. Este evento irá ser organizado pela FSUGItalia em cooperação com a FSFE.

No hackerspace de Cairo planeámos construir um scanner de livros para dá-lo às equipas de conteúdo da Wikipedia Arábica. Achamos que isso é uma foa forma de apoiar o Document Freedom Day.

Iremos celebrar o DFD 2012 no Hackerspace de Cairo Hackerspace construindo o scanner de livros diy e com palestras a explicar a liberdade documentar e o código aberto em geral. O convite é aberto e gratuito para todos os que queiram ajudar a construir o scanner ou tenham outras ideias como fazer apresentações ou workshops.

We have a small salon party celebrating Document Freedom Day 2012, sharing thoughts about the open standard and the current progress of the open document format.

On the occasion of the Document Freedom Day, Konstantin von Notz and Nicole Maisch - both members of the German Parliament - asked a so called "Kleine Anfrage" to the German federal government in promotion of FSFE's PDFreaders campaign: “Werbung für proprietäre Software auf Seiten von Bundesministerien und der öffentlichen Verwaltung”. A "Kleine Anfrage" is a questionnaire, that must be answered and the German federal government now has responded. The questioner are happy for every helping hand to evaluate the given answers. The Grüne parliamentary group in Berlin will award the city of Vienna for using Open Standards in all their publications. Therefore, Dr. Ralph Schneider, Austrian ambassador, will serve as a representative of the Austrian capital.

The event takes place at the embassy of Austria in Berlin, beginning at 10 am. Stefan Gelbhaar, Vice-Chairman of the Grüne parliamentary group in Berlin, will be present, as well as Thomas Birk, member of the Parliaments. After introductive words and talks, together they will hand over a DFD-cake to Mr. Schneider.

The event is open for public, but needs registration beforehand, as it is inside the embassy.

Op woensdag 28 maart 2012 organiseert Document Freedom Day Nederland in de Koninklijke Bibliotheek (KB) in Den Haag, de vierde Nederlandse editie van Document Freedom Day! Dit in navolging van Document Freedom Day 2011, 2010 en 2009. Met presentaties over open dokumentformaten, open standaarden en toepassingen die daarmee overweg kunnen.

Het thema van dit jaar is "Terug naar de Toekomst" De editie van 2012 zal dan ook, in navolging van 2011, worden gekenmerkt door een sterke inbreng vanuit de erfgoedsector. De openheid van informatie en het gebruik van open formaten is in deze sector van het allergrootste belang – in het zicht van brede beschikbaarstelling, openbaarheid van informatie en duurzame toegang.

We will give a 15min talk and presentation at a local University, give brochures to the two libraries of the city and maybe have a small booth at central square which is unclear yet.

FreieSoftwareOG will have an information booth in the local public library, to inform people about Open Standards and Free Software.

HackLab Catanzaro organizes the DFD 2012 at the *Lab (association's headquarters). The event will be divided into three main topics: Document and Multimedia formats (ODF, OGG) and ePub standard; Licenses (GNU FDL, CC, OFL); Free software office suites (LibreOffice, Abiword).

Talks and seminaries about Open Standards will be held in the Tecnologico Comfenalco University

1&1, GMX and WEB.DE receive the German Document Freedom Award for the use of Open Standards. The prize is awarded by the Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE) and the Foundation for a Free Information Infrastructure e.V. (FFII). 1&1 is awarded for automatically adding XMPP for all customers of their mail services. The Document Freedom Award is awarded annually on the occasion of Document Freedom Day - the international day for Open Standards. Last years winners include tagesschau.de, Deutschland Radio, and the German Foreign Office.

This is the second of three events organised by Ubuntu-ve.

On the day 27th of March, we will be celebrating the DFD in the city of Caripito, Venezuela. There will be lectures and workshops given for students and teachers from 8:00 am to 12:00 p.m. at the University of Technology Caripito. We have a lab there with 45 computers.

Samira Khazmou, who is teaching in this institution, is organizing the event.

FSFE will award the Slovak Committee for Standardization of Information Systems of Public Administration, to recognize adoption of Open Standards for entire Slovak public administration. Martin Husovec together with local NGOs and academics will present the prize.

This is the first of three events organised by Ubuntu-ve.

It starts at 23rd of March in the Unidad Educativa Fe y Alegría, city of Maturin, where there will be lectures and workshops given to students and teachers. For LibreOffice workshops, we will have over 50 computers. You can find the agenda of the event here.

On the 2nd of April 2011 at 15:00, the Hacking Laboratory Catanzaro (HackLabCZ) is organizing talks at the *LAB (association's headquarters) which will cover topics like document formats (ODF), licenses (GNU FDL, CC) and free software office suites (LibreOffice, Abiword, Gnumeric). Freedom Soldiers, a local Free Software Community, will be organizing talks at the local campus of the University of Panama, which will cover topics like ODF and Social Networking in Open Standards. These will be on April 2nd due to issue with the availability of locations.

On the 2nd of April 2011, the Free Software User Group Italia (FSUGItalia) is organising a series of talks on the importance of using ODF, in particular for students and schools in Spoleto (Perugia). Read more about this on the official event page.

On the 31st of March, 2011, there will be a speech about Open Document Format and the value of its use in the public sector and we will have conversations and flames how this can be implemented in Greece, and by afternoon we will organise our LPI Exam Lab. The event takes place in the GNU/Linux Lab in Thessaloniki, Greece, and is organised by the Association of Greek Users and Friends of Free Software.

In the Paul-Henri Spaak building of the European Parliament (room 4B001), there will be an event on Open Standars to emphasize the opportunities offered by digital technologies to broaden access to culture in Europe and in the world. This will takes place from 1 to 3 p.m. and is organised by MEPs Malika Benarab-Attou, Indrek Tarand and Karima Delli.

The three following speakers are invited:

• Stefan Gradmann is Professor of Library and Information Science at Humboldt-University in Berlin with a focus on knowledge management and semantics based operations. He is also a leader of Europeana's technical work package on semantic interoperability and one of the main contributors to the Europeana Data Model (EDM). Previously, Stefan was director of the German Academic Publishers Project, and a technical co-ordinator of the EC-funded FIGARO project - both were concerned with Open Access. He was also an international advisor for the ACLS Commission on Cyberinfrastructure for the Humanities and Social Sciences, contributing to the report Our Cultural Commonwealth. The overall focus of his work is an integrated view of the scholarly information lifecycle. He puts emphasis on interoperability and open methods of modeling the scholarly information continuum - both in technical terms and in an e-scholarship perspective.
• Håkon Wium Lie is Chief Technology Officer of Opera Software. He proposed the concept of Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) while working with Tim Berners-Lee and Robert Cailliau at CERN in 1994, CSS being one of the fundamental web standards, with profound impact on typography, aesthetics, and accessibility on the web. In 2006, Wium Lie started campaigning for browsers to support downloadable web fonts using common font formats. As of 2009, all major browser vendors except Microsoft have implemented web fonts this way.
• Kaido Kikkas is a Ph.D, Associate Professor at the Estonian Information Technology College and Associate Professor of Social and Free Software at Tallinn University, in Estonia. He is a researcher and free/open-source software (FOSS) enthusiast (or "academic hacker") and teaches a number of courses on various IT issues (ethical and legal aspects, FOSS development, security etc.).

Talks and presentations, with the presence of several Portuguese political parties and other interested parties from fields like education, libraries and more… Sounds like a great program!
